Where can I paint a Daruma in Osaka?
DARUMA LAB. is a hands-on Daruma painting studio in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. You paint and personalise your own traditional Japanese Daruma and take it home after the experience. The studio is on the 2nd floor of the Popolo Building, a 3-minute walk from Shinsaibashi Station.
What exactly do you do in the experience?
You choose a Daruma from twelve colours — each colour carries its own meaning — and then draw and write your wish on it with a brush. You can pick any ink colour. Staff show you how to hold the brush and how to write, so no experience is needed.
Writing your own words with a brush is the part that makes this different from simply colouring a doll. People write goals, names, dates or a message for someone else.
How long does it take?
About 90 minutes from start to finish. Drying and wrapping are included in that time, so you leave with your Daruma in hand.
How much does it cost?
8,000 yen per person, tax included. One Daruma doll, all paints and brushes, and an apron are included. A gold or silver Daruma is 1,000 yen extra, and those two are decorated with markers rather than a brush.
What you will make
A Daruma is a traditional Japanese lucky doll modelled on Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. It is sold with blank eyes on purpose. You fill in one eye when you set a goal, and the other when you reach it.
That is why a Daruma is not finished when you buy it. At DARUMA LAB. you finish it yourself, which is the whole point of the experience.

Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Staff guide the experience in Japanese and English, and use a translation app for other languages.
Can children join?
Yes. There is no age limit, and younger children are welcome with an adult. Aprons are provided and the paint washes off hands with water.
Can I take my Daruma home the same day?
Yes. We dry and wrap it during the session so it travels safely in your luggage. We do not ship Daruma dolls.
Do I need a reservation?
Yes, the experience is by reservation. Bookings are open now, and the first available date is 26 September 2026, our opening day.
